A magic cloth that carries water. "Super water-repellent" furoshiki born from Kiryu technology.|NAGARE (Super Water-Repellent Furoshiki)
Unlike typical waterproofing (a coating), the fibers themselves are modified —
so "breathability" that lets air and moisture through is kept.
It doesn't feel stuffy, machine-washes, and an iron restores its repellency. A magic cloth, in truth.
Repels water — yet lets air through
Founded in 1892. "NAGARE" is a super water-repellent furoshiki developed by Asakura Sen-i Co., Ltd., a dyeing-and-finishing company in Kiryu City, Gunma. Its greatest feature is water repellency strong enough to carry water like a bucket. Using the distinctive process "dewelry®," a water-repellent layer is formed on each fiber of the cloth. Water beads roll off, yet the weave is not blocked — breathability remains. As an umbrella for sudden rain, a bag for wet swimwear, or a tank to carry water in a disaster, a single cloth brings peace of mind and convenience to modern life.
Why "NAGARE" Is Chosen | 3 Reasons
A remarkable proprietary technique, "dewelry®"
Applied technology cultivated in materials development for competitive swimwear. Rather than coating the whole fabric, each fiber is wrapped in an invisible barrier — achieving strong water repellency and breathability at the same time. Apply water pressure, and water can even pass through like a shower.
Machine washable and long-lasting
Overcomes the weak point of water-repellent finishes — degradation from washing. Testing has proven that the repellency holds even after 100 washes in a household machine. If repellency weakens, a quick iron heats it back to life.
Performance as disaster-prep gear
Tie the corners into a bag shape and you can carry about 10 liters of water (with the 96cm plain weave). Because it repels water and is hard to soil, it can also be used hygienically as a privacy screen at an evacuation shelter, as rain protection, or as an apron or placemat at mealtimes.
Editor's Note
I was shocked watching the video of "carrying water with a furoshiki" and started by buying one for emergency prep. Actually using it, it's the strongest as a daily eco-bag. Set it in the supermarket basket and tie it up after checkout. The contents don't get wet on rainy days, and even if a juice spills, you can just wash it. Above all, the flexibility — tied this way it's a tote, that way a backpack — is wonderful. On trips I wrap a change of clothes as a compression-bag substitute and use it as a sub-bag or picnic mat at my destination.
One Cloth That Protects and Colors Life | 5 Editor's Picks
Centered on the most popular 96cm (large) size, sizes and materials carefully picked by use. With many patterns, choosing is a pleasure in itself.
Plain Weave 96cm (Large)
Can carry a bucket's worth of water. Ideal as an eco-bag and for disaster prep.
The standard "NAGARE." A large size of about 96cm square — easy to use as a shopping-basket bag. Tied into a knot, it carries about 10 liters of water. The widest range of patterns — recommended as your first.
As an eco-bag, bag cover, disaster-prep item or tablecloth.
Amunzen 128cm (Extra Large)
A premium pear-skin weave. Large enough to wrap a kimono.
Uses "amunzen weave" fabric with fine texture on the surface. Compared to plain weave, it's thicker, more durable and feels more luxurious. The extra-large 128cm size is ideal for wrapping a kimono or large luggage. Also good as a sofa cover or wall hanging.
For wrapping kimono, as interior textile, or in place of a stole.
Plain Weave 70cm (Medium)
Convenience-store eco-bag size. Also great for wrapping sweets.
A handy size of about 70cm square. Just right for a convenience-store run or wrapping a small souvenir. While traveling, useful as a substitute for a clothes compression bag or to carry a change of clothes to the hot spring.
A convenience-store bag, travel packing, or gift wrap.
Taffeta 125cm (Rain Fabric)
The strongest repellency, in umbrella fabric. Carries 20 liters of water.
A model using high-density "taffeta," the fabric used in umbrellas and raincoats. Thinner and lighter than plain weave, with high water-pressure resistance. At the large 125cm size, it carries about 20 liters of water. For outdoors and serious disaster prep.
Outdoors, camping, a water-tank substitute in a disaster, or a raincoat.
Futakoshi Chirimen 96cm
A supple texture. An elegant water-repellent furoshiki that complements a kimono.
A revolutionary product applying super water-repellent processing to "chirimen" (crepe) — a fabric with a distinctive crimp. Because the weave is open, it isn't suited to carrying water, but it firmly repels droplets. Soft and supple, it's also wonderful as a scarf or a haori-style cover over a kimono.
For going out in a kimono, as a kimono cover on rainy days, or as a scarf.
Summary: Being prepared keeps regret at bay.
Use it day-to-day as an eco-bag or tablecloth; in an emergency it becomes a bucket or a disaster-prep hood.
"NAGARE" is the very picture of a "phase-free" tool — one that doesn't separate everyday from emergency.
Slip just one into your bag and a great peace of mind quietly enters daily life.
