Shuri Dyeing and Weaving Museum suikara

Shuri, the former royal capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom, stands on a hill overlooking both the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean, blessed with lush greenery and abundant spring water. Within this environment, Ryukyu bingata developed as a resist-dyeing technique rich in color and bold motifs, while Shuri-ori evolved into a sophisticated weaving tradition with a wide variety of structures and ikat patterns. These textiles have long been cherished as symbols of Okinawan aesthetics and craftsmanship.

Shuri Dyeing and Weaving Museum suikara was established in the Tounokura district of Shuri as a place to pass on these textile traditions to future generations. As a base for the successor training programs of the Ryukyu Bingata Cooperative and the Naha Traditional Textile Cooperative, the facility hosts training courses and apprenticeship programs for young artisans, while also welcoming the general public through exhibitions and hands-on experiences.

Inside the building, workshops are located adjacent to galleries, the shop, and information areas. Techniques honed in the studios are shared directly with visitors as finished works, products, and workshops. By bringing together those who "learn" and those who "enjoy," suikara aims to keep traditional techniques alive as part of everyday life rather than as distant museum pieces.

The museum also focuses on digital outreach, including an online store and video content, making it possible for people far from Okinawa to encounter these textiles. Visiting suikara while strolling through the historic streets around Shuri Castle allows guests to discover the stories woven into each piece of cloth and to feel more deeply connected to Okinawa's cultural heritage.

A hub for Ryukyu bingata and Shuri-ori

Opened in 2022, suikara serves as a joint hub for the Ryukyu Bingata Cooperative and the Naha Traditional Textile Cooperative (Shuri-ori). It brings together studios, galleries, a shop, and information spaces under one roof so that people can learn about, experience, and support the continuation of these textile traditions.

Gallery space that tells the stories of beautiful textiles

The first-floor gallery presents kimono, obi, fabrics, and small items in both Ryukyu bingata and Shuri-ori. Through permanent and special exhibitions, visitors can experience the richness of Okinawa's dyeing and weaving culture in a museum-like environment near Shuri Castle Park.

Hands-on programs with craftsmen

Suikara offers hands-on programs such as Ryukyu bingata tote bag and coaster dyeing and Shuri-ori weaving on small looms. Guided by experienced artisans, these programs allow beginners and children to experience authentic techniques in a relaxed setting, making them popular with families, school trips, and tour groups.

Original items and made-to-order services

In addition to textiles and accessories, the on-site shop and official online store carry suikara-original goods that can only be found here. The museum also provides made-to-order services, including semi-order kariyushi wear, custom-made kimono and obi, and fully bespoke dyeing and weaving projects.
