Brand & Maker Overview

TSUCHIYA KABAN

Companion-like leather bags carrying value that is loved across time.

Tsuchiya Kaban began in 1965 as a small randoseru (Japanese school backpack) workshop in the old downtown of Tokyo. Building on the techniques cultivated in making randoseru that pursue durability and dignity, it has expanded into leather bags, wallets and small goods for adults. Under the concept of "value loved across time," it delivers leather items that give form to a Japanese sense of care — for people, for objects and for time.

Why We Love It

My own son has a Tsuchiya Kaban randoseru — and the spirit of "durable and beautiful" craftsmanship lives on in its adult leather goods too. The simple, dignified designs are unswayed by trends and grow into the owner's life the more they are used. With generous repair support, this is a brand that genuinely pursues "value loved across time." A piece to choose as a reward for yourself at life's milestones.

PROFILE About the Company / Workshop

Tsuchiya Kaban's history began in 1965 with a small randoseru workshop that founder Kunio Tsuchiya opened in downtown Tokyo. Driven by the wish "for the smiles of children," he devoted himself to making randoseru that balance durability and dignity — a craft and spirit that have been carried on for more than half a century.

Entering the 2000s, the company drew on the carrying comfort and durability know-how cultivated in randoseru manufacturing to take on leather bags for adults. It has since produced one bag after another for everyday life and work — business bags, briefcases, tote bags, backpacks and more.

The brand concept is "value loved across time." Rather than ornate decoration, it values the character and presence of materials and the attachment that grows with use. Caring for people, respecting nature, using things for a long time — it aims to bring this Japanese spirit to the world through leather items and experiences.

Today it operates directly managed stores across Japan and in Taiwan, and runs a randoseru brand and a global website for overseas customers. Its online store offers rich editorial content and care information, and it continues forward as a brand that connects makers, users and time.

The craft of "bags you carry on your back," born from a randoseru workshop

Tsuchiya Kaban was founded in 1965 as a randoseru workshop in Nishiarai, Tokyo. The balance of durability, carrying comfort and dignity it refined to support children through six years of school is carried over into adult "back-carry" bags such as backpacks and briefs.

Leather chosen around the concept of "value loved across time"

Cordovan, bridle leather, nume (vegetable-tanned) leather and other fine hides that age beautifully are carefully selected. Designed on the premise that color and luster deepen with long use and develop a character all your own, these bags and wallets become true "companions."

Careful craftsmanship, made one by one by Japanese artisans

Working from ateliers in Nishiarai, Tokyo and in Nagano, artisans attend to every detail — from leather selection for each part through cutting, sewing and finishing. By taking care even with unseen areas, such as machine stitching and edge (koba) burnishing, they achieve dependable durability and a dignified presence.

After-care backed by "Permanent Support"

Repair, re-coloring, personalization services and reuse — "Permanent Support" is provided so you can keep using your item with confidence long after purchase. Care methods are explained in-store and online, with a system in place to breathe new life into leather items that have shared a long time with you.
