Fukagawa Seiji
Fine Arita porcelain from a century-old kiln in Saga, Japan.
PROFILE About the Company / Workshop
Fukagawa Seiji is an Arita porcelain kiln founded in 1894 in Saga Prefecture, Japan. Its founder, Chuji Fukagawa, travelled to Europe at a young age and fused the long-cultivated techniques of Arita with advanced European ceramic technologies. The monumental vase he created for the 1900 Paris Exposition was awarded the Grand Prix, drawing international attention and establishing the brand as a trusted supplier for the Imperial Household.
Out of this history emerged the unique “Fukagawa style,” which stands apart from classic Imari, Kakiemon and Nabeshima designs. It combines refined forms with bold compositions and subtle colours. The bright underglaze blue on translucent white porcelain—often called Fukagawa Blue—has become the hallmark of the brand and continues to fascinate collectors and tableware lovers around the world.
At the century-old kiln surrounded by the mountains and rivers of Arita, all steps of production are done in-house: material selection, body making, forming, bisque firing, glazing, main firing and overglaze decoration. The company also prepares its own pigments. This integrated process allows it to achieve delicate gradations, soft tones and the airy lightness of translucent white porcelain that distinguish its tableware.
Through the official online store, customers can explore a broad range of items by category—plates, small plates, rice bowls, bowls, cups and saucers, mugs, wine cups, sake ware, teapots and teaware, lidded boxes, table accessories, vases and interior objects, bonbonnières and more. Items can also be selected by design themes such as underglaze blue, celadon, simple modern, floral motifs or animal motifs, as well as by collection including “Tetote,” “Blue Winery,” “Blue China,” “Kotobuki Akae,” “TEWAZA,” “KUROTAKE,” “Kiku Shippo” and others.
For gifting, the store provides curated selections for many occasions: return gifts, wedding celebrations, baby gifts, longevity celebrations, milestone events, overseas gifts and condolence gifts. Wrapping, noshi paper and paper bags are available, and an e-gift service enables sending gifts online. Memorial items such as long-life urns, keepsake urns, Buddhist altar ware and pet urns are also offered, allowing porcelain to accompany important life moments and memories.
Beyond the online experience, visitors can encounter Fukagawa Seiji in person at the main shop in Arita, at the kiln-direct complex CHINA ON THE PARK, and at the lifestyle-oriented concept store “FUKAGAWA-SEIJI The House Roppongi” in Tokyo. Across all of these places, the brand continues to create porcelain that quietly enriches everyday dining and special occasions alike.
