Takazawa Candle
A flame that someday brings hope.
Founded in 1892 in Nanao, Noto, Takazawa Candle crafts Japanese candles with plant-based wax and a wick made from washi paper and tōshin-gusa. The cylindrical, hollow wick keeps supplying wax and oxygen as it burns, supporting a bright flame that holds up well even with a little breeze. Takazawa uses several kinds of plant wax—such as haze, palm, rapeseed, rice bran, and urushi—depending on the candle. Rooted in satoyama blessings and connections with production regions across Japan, the brand also links its work to SDGs initiatives. One small flame can bring a quiet pause to everyday life.
Why We Love It
In the evening, dim the room lights and light a single Takazawa candle. As the flame moves, shadows shift softly and the space feels deeper. Rapeseed (Nanohana) candles are easy to use day to day, and a snuffer helps you finish quietly and neatly. Afterward, everything slips back into its box and into a drawer, keeping the tabletop tidy. On the table, a few candles spaced out look effortlessly right. For guests, that gentle rhythm of light becomes part of the conversation.
PROFILE About the Company / Workshop
Takazawa Candle is made by TAKAZAWA SHOTEN, founded in 1892 in Nanao. Using natural materials such as wax, washi, and tōshin-gusa, the company has kept making candles alongside the town’s rhythm. Nanao’s history of maritime trade helped connect the area with many regions. Takazawa emphasizes coexistence with production regions across Japan and sees continued craft as part of preserving traditional local landscapes.
At the heart of a Japanese candle are the wick and the wax. The wick is formed by hand: tōshin-gusa is wrapped with washi into a cylinder and secured with thin cotton. Tōshin-gusa comes from the sponge-like inner part of igusa. Because the wick stays hollow, wax and oxygen keep flowing during burning, creating a bright flame that is resilient to wind. The finished wick is set in a mold and molten wax is poured and cooled, then carefully finished one by one.
Takazawa uses several plant waxes—haze, palm, rapeseed, rice bran, urushi, and more. Guides for basic shapes, colors, and approximate burn times are provided, so you can choose with confidence. The size list includes entries such as “Nanao 90 min,” “Ipponsugi 40 min,” and “Urushi 50 min.” Rapeseed candles are described as drip-resistant with reduced odor, blending naturally into everyday life.
The company states its values as “ingenuity and tradition, innovation and craft,” and speaks of lighting a flame to create time that steadies mind and body. After the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, a temporary shop was opened in Ipponsugi while reconstruction continues. Candle-making and painting experiences have also started again, letting visitors see how a flame is born. The new slogan—“A flame that someday brings hope”—feels quietly tangible when the light begins to sway.
Plant wax and a washi + tōshin-gusa wick
Takazawa’s candles use plant-based wax, and the wick is built from washi paper and tōshin-gusa, secured with thin cotton. The wick stays hollow to the tip, continuing to supply wax and oxygen while burning. That structure supports a bright flame that holds up well even with a little breeze. Watching the flame is often enough to calm the mind.
Different plant waxes, different moods
Takazawa uses multiple plant waxes—haze, palm, rapeseed, rice bran, urushi, and more—selected by purpose. Basic shapes, colors, and burn-time guides are provided, making it easier to choose. White and red options connect naturally with seasonal moments and ceremonial uses. Picking the right one becomes part of the pleasure.
Since 1892, in Nanao, Noto
Established in 1892, Takazawa has continued making Japanese candles in Nanao. The craft relies on satoyama resources and on coexistence with production regions across Japan. Continuing the work is also seen as a way to help preserve traditional local landscapes. The company also states its commitment to SDGs.
Rapeseed candles for everyday use
The rapeseed (Nanohana) candle uses wax derived from rapeseed oil. It is described as drip-resistant and with reduced odor, making it easy to bring into daily routines. Paired with a candle stand, the flame’s movement becomes even more beautiful. It also makes a thoughtful gift.
