Yamadai Farm grows Shinshu apples year-round in apple orchards spreading in Akanuma, Nagano City, in northern Nagano Prefecture. In this land that has faced flooding of the Chikuma River — while protecting the fields inherited from the first generation — three generations have continued making apples we ourselves think are delicious. Cultivating with low pesticides centered on organic fertilizer — prioritizing safety and flavor over appearance — delivering apples in various styles from gift use to home use to apple picking.

Why We Love It

A long-established orchard continuing over 100 years in Akanuma — the birthplace of Shinshu apples. The apples that powerfully revived after overcoming the hardship of the 2019 typhoon flood damage carry the producer's indomitable spirit. Sticking to "flavor and safety over appearance" — "Sun Fuji" raised with organic fertilizer is full of honey with concentrated flavor! Real Shinshu apples brimming with vitality — making you want to bite whole skin and all.

PROFILE About the Company / Workshop

In the Meiji era, in Akanuma where rice growing was difficult due to repeated Chikuma River flooding — apple cultivation spread as a crop strong against water. Within that flow, the predecessor opened fields — Yamadai Farm's history begins. Since then, while the family works together — accumulating over a century of time with apple trees.

When third-generation orchard owner Mr. Yoshitaka Nishizawa fully concentrated on agriculture — registering the trademark "Shinshu Apple Birthplace." Embedding in the name the pride as a representative Shinshu apple production region, and the responsibility to continue delivering safe and delicious apples to customers.

Currently still based on organic fertilizer and low pesticides — sharing work among the family for soil-making, pruning, and harvest. As an apple orchard enjoyable for flower viewing in spring and harvest experiences in autumn — continuing orchard-making open to tourists and local people.

At the temporary store set up in the parking lot of 7-Eleven Apple Line — during harvest season — apple picking and direct sales of freshly picked apples are conducted. While not a large facility — while enjoying conversation with the orchard owner — apples chosen by your own eyes can be tasted on the spot — a rustic and warm space.

Rooted in Akanuma, Nagano City — known as the birthplace of Shinshu apples — Yamadai Farm has continued apple making for about 100 years. With fields sandwiched between mountains and the Chikuma River — from white flowers in spring to autumn foliage — the apple orchard scenery changing expressions by season is also one of the appeals.

Cultivation with organic fertilizer and low pesticides — wanting to feed grandchildren with peace of mind

From the thought "we want to feed our grandchildren with peace of mind" — engaging in cultivation centered on organic fertilizer and suppressing pesticide use as much as possible. Because prioritizing safety and flavor over appearance — even if the apple shape is slightly uneven, cherishing the aroma and sweetness at the moment of biting.

About 10 varieties enjoyable seasonally — from Natsu-akari to Sun Fuji

From summer varieties like Natsu-akari and Shinano Lip — to Akibae, Shinano Sweet, and winter Sun Fuji — cultivating about 10 varieties carefully selected by the orchard owner in small-quantity, multi-variety style. By rotating varieties along the harvest calendar — shipping so flavors can be enjoyed period by period.

Freshness protected by rice husks, and handmade juice & jam gifts

In shipping boxes, plenty of rice husks are laid out — gently protecting apples from temperature changes, drying, and transport impact. In the in-orchard processing facility, 100% apple juice and additive-free jam are handmade — delivered nationwide as gift sets that leverage the apple's original aroma and sweetness.
