Kutani-yaki Kiln Miyayoshiseitou -tocowa-

A kiln handling everything from "white Kutani" clay-body making to daily vessels — while respecting Kutani-yaki's history and spirit.

"Miyayoshiseitou Co., Ltd." — with a kiln in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture — is a Kutani-yaki kiln founded in 1972. Centered on white porcelain clay-body making using Hanasaka pottery stone, artisans shape vessels of diverse forms one by one by hand — plates, bowls, cups, sake ware, and more. While valuing the beauty of bluish-white unique to Kutani-yaki and simple designs that fit modern dining tables, the brand proposes vessels coloring everything from daily meals to special scenes. Through collaborations and the original brand "tocowa," the brand shares Kutani-yaki's new form — "continuing to evolve youthfully based on tradition."

Why We Love It

Simple, modern "white" beauty that overturns the image of luxurious Kutani-yaki. Precisely because it's a kiln handling from the translucent white porcelain clay-body making using Hanasaka pottery stone, the formative beauty of the vessel itself stands out. The original brand "tocowa" has the embracing power to receive any cuisine — the appeal is being usable without strain at the daily table. The optimal brand as a new entrance to Kutani-yaki.

PROFILE About the Company / Workshop

Miyayoshiseitou's journey began in 1972 (Showa 47), when it was founded as a white porcelain body manufacturing kiln for Kutani-yaki. Initially manufacturing centered on clay-fired vases and sake ware / tea ware — and then expanding business domain to mass production of tokkuri by porcelain and tableware manufacturing. While polishing clay-body making techniques rooted in the Kutani-yaki producing region, the company has produced vessels for various uses.

Since the 1980s, industrial-use work has also increased — bottle collection containers for beverage makers, vessels for hotels and restaurants, and more. Through high-requirement-level projects — like Suntory's whisky containers and tableware production related to the Imperial Household Agency — the company has refined shaping and firing techniques. In recent years, the company is also engaging in urn manufacturing and a new shaping method combining mold-stamping with hand-thrown wheel.

Long involved with the Kutani-yaki Kiln Industrial Cooperative and Kutani Ceramic Laboratory, contributing to the entire producing region's craftsmanship, human resource development, and creating sharing places — is also a major characteristic of Miyayoshiseitou. While respecting Kutani-yaki's history and spirit, by advancing new craftsmanship looking ahead to era changes, the company aims to contribute to developmental inheritance of the producing region.

And in the 2020s, the company launched the kiln brand "tocowa" — as a place to more directly convey its own craftsmanship. Through the online store, sharing white Kutani vessels, color-painted series, and collaboration items — while continuing activities connecting Kutani-yaki sites and living through factory tours and event participation.
