R×L traces its roots to steady sock-making experience. Takeda Legwear began producing socks in 1982, and kept refining fit and structure through repeated prototyping and verification.

In 1997, the brand reached a key milestone by producing socks with distinct right-and-left toe shapes. It's a simple idea — feet and shoes are not symmetrical — but turning that into consistent manufacturing requires careful shaping and tension control.

In 2002, R×L also succeeded in producing 3D five-toe socks, extending the brand's 3D approach beyond the toe box. From toes to instep, arch, heel, and ankle, the brand focuses on reducing unnecessary slack while avoiding over-tight compression.

On the official shop, items are grouped into RUN, BIKE, FOOTBALL, and LIFE. For running, you can browse by race types like marathon, trail, ultra, and track & field, and use guides and charts to compare models by length, thickness, materials, and features.

R×L also carried out joint verification with Shinshu University's Faculty of Textile Science and Technology in 2005, continuing to deepen its understanding of materials and construction. The goal is reliability — a sock that quietly does its job, every time you move.

Right × Left: the brand's signature 3D left/right design

R×L is built on the idea that socks should match the asymmetry of feet and shoes. In 1997, Takeda Legwear succeeded in producing 3D socks with distinct right-and-left toe shapes and proceeded with patent registrations in Japan and overseas. The concept is literally in the name — Right × Left — aiming for a fit that helps reduce slippage and distraction.

In 2002, the brand also achieved production of 3D five-toe socks. It's not only about separating toes; the shape and volume are engineered to support a closer-to-barefoot sensation. On the official shop, you can choose between five-toe and round-toe styles depending on your preference and how you like to push off.

Y-heel construction for a more secure heel fit

Toe shape is only part of the story — heel fit matters too. R×L lists its left/right 3D heel construction (often referred to as the Y-heel) as one of the core shape designs. The idea is to place tension where it's needed without relying on excessive thickness or harsh compression, so the sock can follow your movement smoothly.

Wedge-like arch design placed where it works best

R×L also highlights a "wedge" arch design. By tuning the 3D shape and tension by area — instep, arch, heel, and ankle — the sock aims to sit naturally on the foot and keep up with motion. Rather than stacking features, the brand focuses on placing the right function in the right place for that immediate, unified feel.
