Yoshida Denzai Distillery

A craft grain whisky born from honesty and precision engineering.

Yoshida Denzai Distillery is a craft distillery in Shukuda, Murakami City, Niigata, specializing in grain whisky. Drawing on the precise manufacturing skill cultivated in industrial- and medical-equipment design and production, it has become Japan's first distillery dedicated solely to "craft grain whisky," taking on small-batch production of distinctive new-make spirits. Using domestic grains — Hokkaido-grown corn and others — as the main ingredients, it explores a wide range of grain-whisky styles that work both for blending and on their own.

Why We Love It

A precision-equipment maker making whisky? The surprise is real, but the substance is serious. As a rare "grain-whisky-only" distillery in Japan, it continues its distinctive challenge in Shukuda, Murakami. Distillation that draws on careful manufacturing and a commitment to Hokkaido-grown corn produces new-make spirits with a delicate, clear flavor — hinting at new possibilities for Japanese whisky.

PROFILE About the Company / Workshop

Grain whisky is often spoken of as the "quiet" presence that supports blended whisky — but Yoshida Denzai Distillery wants to bring its possibilities much further forward. Combining diverse grains, casks and distillation conditions, the team prepares small lots of new-make spirit with distinct character, naming them "Small Batch Grain" and proposing grain whisky in which each character can be enjoyed individually.

The distillery's parent, Yoshida Denzai Kogyo, is a manufacturer founded in 1940. Through the design and production of industrial and medical equipment, it has long supported Japanese manufacturing. A history of listening to the shop floor and polishing quality through kaizen and QC activities is now alive in whisky-making as well. To make products you can trust through "honesty" and "precision" — that posture carries directly into making new-make spirits, putting a manufacturer's technology and sense of responsibility into every bottle.

Yoshida Denzai Distillery upholds three missions. First, to broaden the "diversity" of Japanese whisky by incorporating Japan-typical ingredients and casks — rice, buckwheat, regional specialty grains and more. Second, to advance research and development of domestic grain new-make spirits essential to blended whisky, and to become a reliable source of new-make for craft distilleries. Third, to pursue cultivation projects for domestic grains — beginning with Hokkaido-grown corn — and ultimately realize an "all-domestic" whisky with 100% Japanese ingredients.

In Shukuda, Murakami City, Niigata — surrounded by the Sea of Japan and the mountains, with a snowy, humid climate — allied with abundant water and a generous environment, the distillery sends a new vision of grain whisky out to the world. Yoshida Denzai Distillery aims to shape the next era of Japanese whisky with Made-in-Japan technology and sensibility.
