Why We Love It

A Nasu Highlands farm raising "Guernsey cattle" — only about 200 head in Japan. Their milk — called "Golden Milk" — is rich and creamy yet with a clean aftertaste! Especially "Guernsey Golden Ice Cream" using this milk — has deliciousness that makes farm scenery come to mind the moment eaten. The "spreadable cheese" for bread is also a hidden masterpiece — adding fun to breakfast.

PROFILE About the Company / Workshop

Nasu Highlands Minamigaoka Bokujo's beginning was shortly after the war in 1948 (Showa 23). In the Nasu land — where rich nature spreads — started farm management centered on dairy farming. Since founding — arranging a system consistently performing "production, processing, and sales" — focused on delivering the deliciousness of freshly-squeezed milk in as-is form as much as possible to customers.

From the first farm manager's thinking "we cannot receive admission fees from customers visiting our home" — Minamigaoka Bokujo has continued walking as a tourism farm with free admission and free parking. That thought is still inherited today — beloved as a place where anyone can casually drop by and spend each their own time.

Another major pillar — commitment to the rare dairy breed "Guernsey cattle" in Japan. Introduced from the Channel Islands' Guernsey Island in the Meiji era — this cattle — though smaller in milk quantity than Holstein — has high milk fat and non-fat milk solids — birthing rich and sweet milk. At Minamigaoka Bokujo — starting Guernsey cattle raising from Showa 20s — while introducing from America and repeating breed improvement — has long pursued the possibilities of the Guernsey breed.

What was thus born — the farm-representing "Guernsey Golden Milk" and "Guernsey Golden Yogurt." These products committed to 100% Guernsey milk — won the top Gold Award at the Local Milk Grand Prix and Local Yogurt Grand Prix — and certified as a Nasu Brand — gaining many evaluations. Yogurt slowly fermented in bottles, and ice cream leveraging milk's original flavor — and always exploring flavors that can only be realized precisely because they're made at the farm.

Also — at the farm — providing time where "food" and "experience" become one: animal interaction experiences, hand-making experiences for sausage, butter, and ice cream, farm gourmet like jingisukan and curry, and seasonal events and photo galleries. A moment spent within blue sky and green pastures — becomes a place of learning for children and healing for adults.

Even now — over 70 years since founding — what Minamigaoka Bokujo cherishes — being a place close to nature, animals, and people. Going forward — together with Nasu Highlands' appeal — so that Guernsey cattle milk and farm time can be enjoyed across generations — continuing daily farm work and making.
