Marutoku Nosan
An "eco-farmer" of the Miura Peninsula, practicing circular agriculture with "Megumi Vegetables" raised by the blessings of soil and sea, and tuna-derived fertilizer.
Marutoku Nosan is an open-field vegetable farm with a history continuing since the Edo period, located in Misaki Town at the southern tip of the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture. Leveraging a mild climate surrounded by the sea on three sides and its original fertilizer made from tuna processing residue, the farm practices cultivation focused on reduced pesticides and chemical fertilizers, without the use of soil sterilants. Through "Megumi Vegetables" and the lightly pickled takuan "Mild," the farm continues an agriculture that connects soil, sea, and people.
Why We Love It
"Megumi Vegetables" grown with the sea breeze of the Miura Peninsula and fertilizer made from tuna processing residue. Mineral-rich daikon and cabbage are surprisingly sweet even when eaten raw! In particular, the lightly pickled takuan "Mild" — with its crispy texture and the natural flavor of daikon shining through — is so delicious that you can't stop eating rice with it. The blessings of Miura, born from circular agriculture starting with soil making.
PROFILE About the Company / Workshop
The roots of Marutoku Nosan lie in a farm of the Miura Peninsula continuing since the Edo period. On land blessed with a mild climate surrounded by the sea on three sides and well-draining fields, predecessors have raised open-field vegetables such as daikon and cabbage for generations — always particular about soil making.
In 2019, Kawashima Farm was incorporated as a company and renamed Marutoku Nosan Co., Ltd. Family and staff work together — preserving traditional field-making while also actively taking on new challenges such as online sales, processed product making, and information dissemination.
In cultivation, under the motto of "making vegetables that are delicious to eat and lead to health," the farm thoroughly combines reduced-pesticide and reduced-chemical-fertilizer cultivation with homemade bokashi compost for soil making. Furthermore, by setting original standards that avoid soil sterilants and some pesticides, the farm practices environmentally considerate sustainable agriculture.
The tuna-derived fertilizer born in collaboration with Miura City's fishing industry is one of Marutoku Nosan's symbolic initiatives. By returning tuna processing residue to fields as a resource, the farm has shaped a circular system that connects sea and field. Through "Megumi Vegetables" and the lightly pickled takuan "Mild," the farm delivers flavors and stories unique to the land to dining tables.
An open-field vegetable farm at the southern tip of Miura Peninsula, continuing since the Edo period
A historic farm that has continued making open-field vegetables for over 200 years at the southern tip of the Miura Peninsula, surrounded by the sea on three sides. Centered on Miura's representative vegetables such as daikon, cabbage, and watermelon, the farm still inherits field-making rooted in the local climate.
Certified eco-farmer with original cultivation standards
The integrated approach of "soil making, reduced chemical fertilizers, and reduced chemical pesticides" earned the farm certification as an eco-farmer. Through fertilizer design centered on homemade bokashi compost and original cultivation standards that avoid soil sterilants, the farm produces vegetables with reduced environmental impact.
Tuna fertilizer — agriculture and fisheries joining forces
The farm uses "Megumi Tuna Fertilizer" — residue from tuna processing dried and pelletized — as compost. By circulating fishery byproducts back as field nutrients, the farm uses regional resources without waste and produces "Megumi Vegetables" with enhanced soil power.
Miura's lightly pickled takuan "Mild"
The lightly pickled takuan "Mild" is made from winter-harvested daikon dried by sun and sea breeze, then slowly pickled in rice bran. Characterized by crisp texture and gentle flavor, it has earned Kanagawa Brand registration and various awards — beloved as a pickle representing the region.
