Nanto Bussan

An Okinawan souvenir maker that turns memorable travel moments into delicious gifts.

Nanto Bussan Co., Ltd. is a confectionery and food company based in Naha, Okinawa. As a group company of Nanto, which operates the popular tourist attraction "Okinawa World," it specializes in planning and producing souvenirs for visitors to Okinawa. By drawing on long-term sales data from its own tourist facilities and airport shops, the company develops Okinawa-limited products such as baked sweets, snacks, and PB items that travelers truly want to take home.

Why We Love It

The product development capability — knowing the field inside out as the operating group of "Okinawa World" — is impressive! Especially the cookie "Umi no Kakera" (Fragments of the Sea), which won the Top Prize at the Okinawa Excellent Prefectural Products Program — the taste is great, of course, and the storytelling connecting to coral preservation is perfect. Not just a souvenir, but warm product making that lets you take home "Okinawa memories" along with its "future."

PROFILE About the Company / Workshop

Nanto Bussan was founded in 1976 as a manufacturer and wholesaler of souvenirs in Okinawa. Today the company operates from its head office in Naha, a sales and manufacturing division inside the "Okinawa World" facility in Nanjo City, and sales offices and airport shops in Ishigaki and Miyako. By staying close to the real situations in tourist areas and airports, the company has grown by directly reflecting traveler feedback in its product development.

Its strength lies in the combination of authenticity and playfulness. Nanto Bussan develops products that balance an easy-to-buy price and size with a sense of Okinawan identity in flavors, naming, and package design. Alongside standard chinsuko cookies and pies, the lineup also includes idea-driven items and character-themed products that naturally make people want to take photos of the package and share them.

In its own factory, Nanto Bussan focuses on turning Okinawan ingredients into familiar souvenirs. Stand-up packs of Ishigaki Salt Chinsuko, brown sugar and beni-imo chinsuko, pineapple and mango flavored cookies, and the colorful "Churashima Okinawa Mun Chinsuko" series are just a few examples. Limited items such as hibiscus chinsuko sold only in certain islands add a sense of discovery and locality to the range.

In recent years the company has also worked on products with strong stories, such as the cookie assortment "Umi no Kakera," which expresses the beauty of Okinawan coral reefs and has received the top prize in the Okinawa Excellent Prefectural Products program. The concept connects souvenirs with environmental awareness by using part of the sales to support coral conservation activities, turning a simple gift into an opportunity to think about Okinawa's oceans.

Looking ahead, Nanto Bussan will continue to develop products that are loved not only by tourists but also by local customers. Through souvenirs that can be enjoyed back home at tea time or given as gifts, the company hopes to keep sharing the flavors and stories of Okinawa and to help people feel a closer connection to the islands.

Souvenir planning rooted in Okinawa's leading tourist sites

As a group company of Nanto, which operates "Okinawa World," Nanto Bussan has built its product planning on real experience in Okinawa's sightseeing spots and airport shops. The company uses long-accumulated sales data to create items that match current tourist trends, from classic best sellers to new products that immediately stand out on the shelf.

In-house production of chinsuko and baked sweets using Okinawan ingredients

At its own factory in southern Okinawa, Nanto Bussan manufactures a wide range of baked sweets such as chinsuko cookies and cookies flavored with local ingredients. Products feature Okinawan favorites including Ishigaki sea salt, brown sugar, beni-imo (purple sweet potato), mango, pineapple, shikuwasa citrus, and hibiscus. These ingredients are used to create stand-up pouches, boxed assortments, and other formats that are easy to buy as souvenirs.

From house brands to PB and selected items — supporting entire souvenir corners

In addition to in-house products, Nanto Bussan handles PB brands, Okinawan specialty foods, snacks, character goods, health foods, and daily items. By combining these, the company can support the creation of complete Okinawan souvenir corners for retailers such as hotels, shopping centers, and roadside stations. Its aim is to provide products that help people "like Okinawa even more" every time they pick them up.
