Matsui Hon-Warousoku Kobo

Founded in 1907 (Meiji 40) in Okazaki, Aichi, the workshop has continued making hon-warousoku across generations. It moved to its current location in 1958. In 2016, its hand-painted candles were selected as one of Aichi’s gifts for the Ise-Shima Summit delegations, and in 2019 the fourth generation took over.

The workshop makes traditional hon-warousoku using 100% domestic haze wax. After building up the candle by hand, it is “momizuke” (kneaded), shaped with a plane, and polished. The layered structure leaves a ring-like pattern on the cut face. They also continue a program to collect leftover temple candles and remake them as recycled vermilion candles.

Stick and anchor shapes form the base lineup. Stick candles are offered in sizes like 100/80/50 monme, with burn-time references. Small shapes such as “Daruma” and “Cororo” are easy to bring into everyday life. Hand-painted candles and matching iron tools let the flame—and the scene around it—look its best.

The workshop offers visits, painting, and candle-making experiences, and you can take your finished piece home. Hours are 9:00–17:00 with irregular closing days. It’s about a 7-minute walk from Meitetsu Higashi-Okazaki Station, with on-site parking. Online purchase options and Rakuten listings make it accessible from afar, too.

Made only with domestically sourced haze berry wax. From wick-making to finishing, every step is done by hand. This steady process is what supports the flame.

Ring-like layers on the cut face

The “tree-ring” layers come from repeatedly coating the wick with wax. These layers help the flame stay stable. Warousoku are also described as producing less soot and dripping less, which feels reassuring in daily use.

Hand-painted candles and iron tools

Okazaki hand-painted candles bring seasonal motifs to life—beautiful even before lighting. Original iron holders, snuffers, and wick trimmers complete the set. There are also painting experiences and kits, so you can enjoy the craft hands-on.
