Where Sabae glasses began. 100 years of "Quality First".|MASUNAGA since 1905

"We manufacture excellent glasses. We would rather make a profit if we can, but we do not hesitate to take a loss. It is always our finest thoughts to make excellent glasses."
This company motto left by the founder is still protected by craftsmen today.
Not chasing trends, but "authentic" items loved across eras are here.

We manufacture excellent glasses.

In 1905, Gozaemon Masunaga sowed the seeds of the optical industry in Fukui Prefecture. Over 100 years later, Sabae has grown into one of the world's three major optical production centers, but Masunaga Optical remains a special existence among them. The biggest feature is the "integrated production system" that manages all 200+ processes from raw materials to finishing in-house. In Sabae, where division of labor is the norm, this attitude of not allowing any compromise on quality is the proof of trust chosen for imperial gifts. The "G.M.S." series, bearing the founder's name, is the pinnacle of Japanese eyewear, fusing classic design with the latest titanium technology.

MASUNAGA since 1905

Why "MASUNAGA" is Chosen | 3 Reasons

0 1

Rare "Integrated Production" in the industry

Normally, glasses making is done by division of labor by many specialized factories such as "rim", "temple", and "polishing", but Masunaga Optical completes all of these within its own group. Design intentions can be directly reflected in products, and thorough quality control down to the details becomes possible.

0 2

"Gift" to Emperor Showa

It was Masunaga Optical that made the glasses presented to Emperor Showa who visited Fukui Prefecture in 1933. The aesthetics and technology of the "celluloid round glasses" made at that time have been passed down to the current "G.M.S." and "Koki" series.

0 3

World's highest "Titanium Processing Technology"

They are also one of the first manufacturers in the world to successfully commercialize titanium glasses. The technology to finish hard and difficult-to-process titanium into delicate engravings and complex structures is world-class. They have won international design awards (Silmo d'Or, etc.) many times.

Editor's Note

📝 User Perspective

When I wore "G.M.S." for the first time, I was shocked by its lightness and good weight balance. Although it has a solid metal texture when held in the hand, it feels like it disappears when put on the face. Especially the beauty of the combination frame combining titanium and acetate (plastic) is at the level of crafts. Every time I see the fine engraving on the bridge and temple, it makes me feel the joy of owning it. It is dignified eyewear that matches both suits and Kimono.
