Why We Love It

Start from your use case: rain, sun, commuting, travel, or gifting. Comparing makers is a pleasant way to notice differences in specifications and feel. For everyday carry, the Full-Size Short idea is worth checking if you want a shorter umbrella without cutting ribs or fabric. For gifts, combine wrapping and name options to match the occasion. If you worry about forgetting umbrellas, adding ID registration can make it easier to reconnect when one is found. When you want to handle umbrellas in person, book a visit to the Sanjyuan showroom.

PROFILE About the Company / Workshop

The story begins in 1896, when founder Jisaburo Miyatake opened an import goods shop called Mitsuwa in Shinsaibashi, Osaka, after a study trip to the United States. In the Taisho era, the business moved into Western-style umbrellas. The second generation renamed it Miyatake and shaped it into a specialist shop for umbrellas and shawls. Today, it also guides customers to the reservation-only showroom, Sanjyuan.

The store was lost in the Osaka air raid in 1945, but business restarted after the war and a Shinsaibashi shop was rebuilt in 1947. It flourished during the busy decades of the 1960s and 1970s and renewed the store in 1975. As the market changed, the shop closed its physical store in 1996 and shifted to mail order. It secured the kasaya.com domain and launched an online shop, learning the tools from scratch.

A major turning point came in 1999, when the assortment was rebuilt around Japanese craft umbrellas. The team visited makers across Japan and repositioned kasaya.com as a portal for artisan umbrellas. The lineup now spans rain umbrellas, parasols, mens and womens umbrellas, walking-stick umbrellas, short umbrellas, umbrella bags, and professional items. For example, the walking-stick umbrella line comes with ID registration and a spare rubber tip as standard equipment.

Support is also a key part of the shop. ID registration links an umbrella to purchase details and allows updates to contact information through the call center. Gift wrapping and name options can be set through a simple three-step process, with wrapping adjusted to the story of the gift. Repairs are accepted for items purchased from the shop. Delivery uses Yamato in Japan and EMS overseas, with hotel delivery options for long stays.

A long history as an umbrella specialist

Founded in 1896, the shop has carried umbrellas through changing eras, including rebuilding after wartime loss and a shift to online sales. It is now led by Kazuhiro Miyatake and supported by a reservation-only showroom, Sanjyuan, alongside the online store.

Curated Japanese-made umbrellas

The core selection focuses on Japanese craft umbrellas. Brands include Maehara Koei Shoten, White Rose, Komiya Shoten, and WAKAO. Choices cover rain and sun use, mens and womens styles, plus umbrella bags and business-use items, so shoppers can start from purpose and narrow down.

Gift wrapping and personalization support

Gifting is designed to be simple. Customers choose a ribbon or noshi gift box, then select gift options in a three-step flow. The shop also offers concierge-style guidance and personalization options, making it easier to match wrapping and details to each occasion.

ID registration and repair support

The ID registration service helps reduce lost umbrellas without printing personal contact details on the umbrella itself. A call center connects finders with owners using an ID number, and owners can update their contact details after registration. It is a quiet way to improve the chances of getting an umbrella back and supports long-term use.
