Saikaan Ooki / Imoya Shodai Senjiro
A sweet potato confectionery and Japanese sweets specialty shop delivering "thank you" and smiles through the phantom potato "Kurimasari" and seasonal Japanese / Western sweets.
"Saikaan Ooki," with its main store in Ageo City, Saitama Prefecture, is a long-established confectionery that has continued to focus on sweet potatoes since its founding. Using the rare contract-cultivated variety "Kurimasari" along with high-quality ingredients from various parts of Japan — such as wasanbon sugar, dainagon azuki beans, Yoshino kuzu, and glutinous rice — the shop delivers "feelings of gratitude and smiles" through season-rich sweet potato confections and Japanese / Western sweets.
Why We Love It
A specialty shop that has continued to focus on sweet potatoes since founding. The sweet potato confections using the rare variety "Kurimasari" are characterized by a chestnut-like fluffiness and refined sweetness. "Imo-komachi," carefully candied by artisans, has a simple yet deep flavor. On the other hand, new sweet potato sweet proposals — such as the apple-paired "Pote-Ringo" pie — are also enjoyable, making this a sacred place for sweet potato lovers.
PROFILE About the Company / Workshop
"Saikaan Ooki" began with sweet potato confections devised by founder Senjiro Ooki. After the war, it developed the manufacturing wholesale of sweet potato confections mainly in the Koedo Kawagoe area — a historic confectionery shop that has walked alongside sweet potato culture.
The second generation encountered the phantom potato "Kurimasari" and started contract cultivation in Hiratsuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture. While inheriting sweet potato confections, the third generation focused on full-scale Japanese confectionery making and — from the desire to "deliver confections that color the seasons" — renamed the shop from "Kaho Ooki" to "Saikaan Ooki."
The current fourth generation, under the management philosophy "for feelings of gratitude and smiles," expands the lineup to sweet potato confections, Japanese sweets, Western sweets, and gifts — while also reaching many customers through exhibitions at station buildings and department stores, communicating the appeal of sweet potatoes. While reflecting Saitama's sweet potato culture and Japan's four seasons in confections, the shop continues to challenge new sweet potato sweet proposals.

Generous use of the phantom contract-cultivated potato "Kurimasari"
Using the rare variety "Kurimasari" contract-cultivated in Hiratsuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Grown in well-draining land, this potato has good compatibility with oil, characterized by a light texture and sweetness that spreads as you chew — supporting the flavor of signature products such as "Imo Matsuba" and "Gin no Imo."
Ingredients sourced down to production area — wasanbon sugar, dainagon azuki, Yoshino kuzu, and more
Using ingredients carefully selected from various parts of Japan — including Tokushima-grown wasanbon sugar, Hokkaido-grown "Hokkai Dainagon" azuki, Nara-grown Yoshino kuzu, and Yamagata-grown glutinous rice. Of course sweet potato confections, but also yokan, kuzukiri, ama-natto, and seasonal cold sweets — all finished one by one with careful handwork.
Sweet potato confection / Japanese & Western sweets gifts perfect for presents
A substantial selection of gift sets combining the potato chip "Gin no Imo," the candied potato "Imo-komachi," sweet potato pies, and baked sweets. A lineup easy to choose for mid-year / year-end gifts, seasonal greetings, and as Saitama / Kawagoe souvenirs.
