Founded in 1916 (Taisho 5), Sumikama Co., Ltd. is a long-established blade maker that develops kitchen-knife brands such as "KASUMI" and "Kasane" in the blade town of Seki City, Gifu Prefecture. Combining the hardening and sharpening skills inherited from Seki swordsmithing with new materials and technologies — VG-10, Damascus steel, titanium coating and more — it plans and manufactures home and professional knives and various blades and household goods. Today it delivers products not only within Japan but to about 50 countries worldwide, contributing to a rich food culture through "tools that cut well."
Why We Love It
The "KASUMI" series that astonished chefs around the world as the "blue knife." The vivid color from its titanium coating and the cutting edge honed by Seki artisans are stunning. "Kasane," created from a woman's perspective, has an outstanding bread knife that slices both hard and soft bread without stress. These are knives that combine design and functional beauty, making it a joy to stand in the kitchen.
PROFILE About the Company / Workshop
Sumikama's history begins in 1916, when the previous head, Ushimatsu Sumikama, started making pocket knives in Seki City. Through forward-thinking initiatives such as introducing punch presses, it contributed greatly to the development of today's Seki blade industry while expanding its business into home and professional blades.
In time it grew into a maker planning and manufacturing a diverse range of blades and household goods — home and professional knives, cookware, industrial blades, gift items and more. While drawing on the traditional techniques of Seki swordsmithing, it has actively taken on new materials and technologies: adopting original materials through collaboration with steel makers, and using molybdenum-vanadium steel, Damascus steel and titanium coating.
Its current flagship brands, "KASUMI" and "Kasane," are designed with emphasis not only on the practicality that supports daily cooking but also on the artistry that lifts the user's spirits. By having skilled artisans finish each knife one by one, they are crafted into kitchen knives that combine sharp, lasting cutting performance with the joy of ownership.
Sumikama's products are chosen not only by households and professional kitchens in Japan but by users in about 50 countries worldwide. Accumulating awards at international trade fairs and a track record of adoption at world cooking competitions, it continues — through making that pursues "cutting performance" and "functionality" — to contribute to a richer, more enjoyable food culture for people around the world.
