SHOHO
Satsuma Kiriko inspired glass art that bridges tradition and contemporary design.
SHOHO is a glass art brand based in Kawakami, Kagoshima City, Japan. From its studio and gallery, Busho Glass Studio creates Satsuma Kiriko cut glass and contemporary glass art, combining the classical designs of historical Satsuma Kiriko with a modern sense of color and form. With the theme "Art is another nature," each piece captures light, gradation, and reflection in glass.
Why We Love It
"Jewels of glass" — this is exactly that. The Satsuma Kiriko crafted by master artist Shoho is exceptional in the beauty of color "bokashi" (gradation)! The world view woven by the sharpness of the cuts and the soft light of the glass washes the heart just by looking at it. Being able to choose art pieces of this class online is the height of luxury. A "lifetime piece" you'll want to give for life milestones such as 60th birthday celebrations or retirements.
PROFILE About the Company / Workshop
Shoho is a glass artist born in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, who has long been engaged in the world of Satsuma Kiriko and glass craft. Building on the heritage of Satsuma Kiriko, he seeks to create works that resonate with contemporary lifestyles.
After gaining experience in traditional Satsuma Kiriko production and restoration projects, he founded Busho Glass Studio and began to develop his own line of Satsuma Kiriko cut glass. Since then, he has continued to explore new expressions through color, cutting, and form.
Guided by the theme "Art is another nature," Shoho's work focuses on the play of light and shadow, gradations of color, and the reflections that arise within glass. Because each piece is hand-cut and polished, even items with the same design have their own individual character.
Today, the studio's activities extend beyond tableware to include jewelry, premium art pieces, and one-of-a-kind objects. Exhibitions at museums, galleries, and department stores, as well as collaborations with cultural institutions, help to introduce Satsuma Kiriko and Kagoshima's craft culture to audiences in Japan and overseas.
Through its directly managed online store, Busho Glass Studio offers a carefully curated selection of works, including signature designs, limited editions, and special motif pieces. Many items are presented in wooden boxes, making them suitable as gifts or commemorative items.
Original "Shoho Kiriko" rooted in classic Satsuma Kiriko
Shoho's cut glass is deeply rooted in the traditions of Satsuma Kiriko, while developing an original style known as "Shoho Kiriko." Delicate cutting and fine gradation between colored and clear glass create a soft yet vivid expression of light.
