Brand & Maker Overview

SAKUZAN

Delicious dishes begin with beauty.

SAKUZAN is tableware made by Sakuzan Kiln in Dachi, Toki City, Gifu—one of Japan’s Mino-yaki regions. From clay preparation to forming, drying, bisque firing, glazing, and final firing, the kiln keeps each step close and deliberate. They work with 14 clay bodies, over 100 glazes, and three firing approaches, so the same shape can feel completely different in your hands. The lineup ranges from the playful colors of DAYS to the crisp look of URBAN, the natural mood of FLOW, and the expressive SENSE, plus PRO-USE for professionals. In November 2019, the brand opened its direct shop, SAKUZAN VILLAGE, in Dachi.

Why We Love It

What I like most is how a few SAKUZAN pieces instantly make the table feel organized. The straight lines and clean circles sit nicely together, and the matte glazes soften the light. I often pick one tone, then add a couple of shapes. Storage stays tidy because sizes stack well. Mix a plate and bowl for everyday meals, or slow down with a cup and saucer for a quiet break.

PROFILE About the Company / Workshop

Sakuzan Kiln works in Dachi, Toki City, Gifu, a Mino-yaki pottery area. The company was established on April 1, 1987, and began presenting new series from the 2000s onward. In 2013, the brand name shifted to SAKUZAN, connecting local craft to modern tables.

The core is materials and process. They work with 14 kinds of clay, over 100 glazes, and three firing methods. The workflow moves step by step—preparing clay, shaping, drying, bisque firing, glazing, and final firing—so the finish matches the intent.

Series development has been continuous, with Sa and Ma (2000), Lotus (2002), Sara (2015), Stripe (2016), and Urban (2017), among others. Today, the five lines—DAYS, URBAN, FLOW, SENSE, and PRO-USE—help you pick a look that fits your space.

For professionals, PRO-USE invites direct consultation to match a dish and concept. The flagship shop SAKUZAN VILLAGE opened in November 2019 in Dachi, and the brand also runs an online store. You can compare textures in person, then add pieces later with confidence.

Clay, glaze, and fire create the signature mood

They choose from 14 clay bodies, more than 100 glazes, and three firing approaches. Small differences in surface and color change the entire feel of a piece. Collecting the same shape in different tones is part of the fun.

Careful steps, made for everyday comfort

From clay preparation and shaping to drying, bisque firing, glazing, and final firing, each step is handled with attention. Details like the rim angle and gentle curves are tuned for comfort in the hand and on the lips.

Five lines, five table atmospheres

The brand presents DAYS, URBAN, FLOW, SENSE, and PRO-USE. Each line has a clear personality, so it is easy to choose by mood. Start with a color, then build a set by shape.

A direct shop in Dachi, plus the online store
