Hoshizuna Glass Studio

Star sand from Ishigaki Island, turned into glass accessories on Naha’s Kokusai Street.

Hoshizuna Glass Studio creates handmade accessories that combine “star sand” collected on Ishigaki Island with original glass pieces. From searching for star sand on the beach to designing, glass firing, assembly and quality checks, every step is done in-house by the studio’s staff. The shop is located on Naha’s famous Kokusai Street, where thousands of one-of-a-kind accessories in colors inspired by the Okinawan sea and sun fill the first-floor store, while the third floor serves as a workshop for hands-on glass accessory making experiences.

PROFILE About the Company / Workshop

The making of Hoshizuna Glass Studio’s accessories begins on the beaches of Ishigaki Island, where staff search for “star sand.” These tiny star-shaped grains are actually the fossilized shells of microscopic marine organisms that wash ashore over time. Once collected, the sand is carefully cleaned, dried and sorted so that only well-shaped grains are used in the glass pieces.

Glass components are also produced in-house, and the studio handles every step from firing and cooling to polishing, inspection and shipping. All accessories sold in the online store are handmade originals, each with slightly different patterns of star sand and glass color. This makes them special items both for personal use and as gifts for someone important.

On Kokusai Street in Naha, the first floor houses the retail shop, while the third floor serves as the hands-on workshop. In the workshop, participants select glass parts and fittings, then encapsulate their chosen star sand to create accessories from scratch. The experience is designed so that beginners and children can enjoy it safely with full support from staff, making it a memorable activity during a trip to Okinawa.

The company behind Hoshizuna Glass Studio, Dear Ryukyu Co., Ltd., is also engaged in SDGs-oriented initiatives, such as supporting marine and coral conservation groups, offering craft workshops and classes, and promoting “made in Okinawa” products. Through both products and experiences, the studio aims to share the beauty of Okinawa’s nature and craft culture with visitors from around the world.

Handmade glass accessories with star sand from Ishigaki Island

Hoshizuna Glass Studio specializes in accessories that encase natural “star sand” from Ishigaki Island in glass. Allergy-conscious materials and advice from specialists

A staff member certified as a metal allergy adviser is available to help customers choose the right materials. The studio offers options such as 18K gold, SILVER925, pure titanium and resin parts, making it easier for people with sensitive skin to enjoy wearing accessories. Many items can be customized with different fittings on request.

Hands-on glass accessory workshops for all ages

On the third floor workshop, visitors can take part in hands-on classes where they choose parts and materials, then encapsulate star sand in glass to make their own accessories. Popular menu options include earrings, pierced earrings, bracelets, key holders and pendant tops. With staff support, even first-timers, children and seniors can enjoy the experience with confidence.
