Founded in 2012 in Yame City, Fukuoka. "Unagi no Nedoko" calls itself a "regional culture trading company" — re-editing native regional culture and traditional crafts to fit modern life and distributing them. What first made the name known: MONPE pants made from Kurume Kasuri, a traditional woven fabric of southern Fukuoka. The image of monpe as wartime work pants ran strong; they adjusted the silhouette to be slimmer and lifted it into a fashion item for everyday wear. Under the concept of "Japanese jeans," they propose comfortable Japanese daily wear.

The traditional textile "Kurume Kasuri"
Uses "Kurume Kasuri," which has continued for some 200 years in the Chikugo region of Fukuoka. The rustic "blurred" pattern is created by tie-dyeing cotton threads before weaving. With excellent breathability and water absorbency, it's a functional natural material — cool in summer, warm in winter.
A modern silhouette
Old-fashioned monpe had a very loose waist; Unagi no Nedoko developed a "modern monpe" pattern that keeps that functionality while trimming the waist area cleanly. With a slimmer silhouette, it blends naturally with modern fashion.

Editor's Note
I had an old-fashioned image when I heard "monpe," but my thinking changed entirely after wearing Unagi no Nedoko's MONPE. The silhouette is slim, and it doesn't look out of place with a T-shirt and sneakers. Above all, the summer comfort is in a league of its own. Even when you sweat, it feels dry, with zero binding. Once you know that openness, you can't go back to heavy denim in summer. Indispensable as room wear, street wear and as relaxing wear while traveling.
