IWACHU (岩鋳)
Nambu Tekki from Morioka. Cast iron for the modern kitchen and table.
Founded in 1902 in Morioka, Iwate — the heartland of Nambu Tekki, Japan's most celebrated cast iron tradition — IWACHU has spent over 120 years making iron kettles, teapots, cookware, and home goods that bridge tradition and modern life. Their colorful enameled teapots (with enamel-coated interiors for easy care) opened Nambu Tekki to a new generation of users worldwide. Their IWACHU Iron Museum (岩鋳鐵器館) offers factory tours and a gallery showcasing the full breadth of Morioka cast iron craft.
PROFILE Company & Brand Story
IWACHU was founded in 1902 in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture — the city that has been synonymous with Nambu Tekki (南部鉄器) cast iron craft for over 400 years. Surviving the trials of wartime and postwar reconstruction, IWACHU built a reputation for producing Nambu Tekki that honored tradition while actively developing new forms and products for contemporary life.
Their breakthrough for international recognition was the colored teapot (カラー急須) — a cast iron teapot with an enamel-coated interior, which eliminates the need for the careful seasoning and drying ritual of a traditional bare-iron tetsubin. The enamel interior resists rust and is easy to clean, making Nambu Tekki accessible to first-time users worldwide while retaining the weight, heat retention, and beauty of real cast iron.
IWACHU's product range extends far beyond teapots. Their kitchen line includes iron frying pans, tamagoyaki (Japanese egg) pans, single-handle pots, and rice cookers — all with the exceptional heat retention that cast iron provides. Their decorative line includes iron wind chimes (furin) with the distinctive clear, resonant tone that only cast metal can produce, along with incense burners, trivets, and small objects.
The IWACHU Iron Museum (岩鋳鐵器館) at their Morioka headquarters is open to visitors. A guided factory tour lets guests watch the casting, painting, and finishing processes up close. The adjacent gallery displays the full product range, and the shop carries items not available elsewhere — making the museum a destination for both Nambu Tekki enthusiasts and first-time visitors to Iwate.
Iron Kettle (Tetsubin) — Builds a Patina Over a Lifetime
An IWACHU iron kettle develops a white mineral patina (yu-aka) with regular use — progressively softening boiled water and adding trace iron. The kettle improves with age. Heat with charcoal or gas for a traditional experience, or use IH-compatible models for everyday convenience.
Colored Teapot — Enamel Interior, Easy Care
IWACHU's colored teapots brought Nambu Tekki to a global audience. Cast iron body for heat retention; enamel-coated interior for rust resistance and easy cleaning. No seasoning ritual required. Available in multiple colors and patterns.
Cast Iron Cookware — Restaurant-Grade Heat Retention
IWACHU's frying pans, tamagoyaki pans, and pots deliver the consistent, even heat retention that cast iron is prized for. Compatible with all heat sources including IH. A frying pan that improves with every use.
