STORY & PRODUCTS 企業について・代表的な製品

The pinnacle workshop in Tsubame, inheriting the intangible cultural asset of "Tsuiki Copperware"

Shimakurado is a manufacturer of "Tsuiki Copperware" with its workshop in Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture. Since its founding in 1967 (Showa 42), it has continued to produce works that pour in tremendous effort and passion — artisans hammering out a single copper sheet with a hammer to create three-dimensional vessels.

The first-generation, Itami Shimakura, became independent after 15 years of rigorous training at Tsubame\'s long-established "Gyokusendo," which has roughly 200 years of history. His outstanding techniques have been passed down to the second-generation traditional craftsman Masayuki Shimakura. Highly evaluated for craftsmanship that withstands long-term use and harmonizes beautifully with modern living, the studio holds numerous awards in competitions such as the "National Traditional Crafts Exhibition."

The overwhelming beauty woven by a single copper sheet and countless "hammer marks"

The greatest characteristic of Shimakurado\'s works is the countless "hammer marks" engraved on their surfaces. Without using any machinery such as presses, the copper sheet is hammered and contracted entirely by hand — so the artisan\'s breath itself appears as the pattern on the finished vessel.

The vivid colors are not from paint. They come from traditional coloring techniques — simmering in a proprietary chemical solution (potassium sulfide, etc.) and inducing verdigris — creating depth of tone unlike anything else. No two pieces are alike — they are "complete one-of-a-kind" works, and as you use them, the color deepens further. With the oils of your hand and friction, you can enjoy the patina aging into your own "personal color."

Main lineup of works to cherish as lifelong treasures

  • Copper sake cups and sake vessels: With excellent thermal conductivity, perfect for the ultimate cup — keeping chilled sake ice-cold.
  • Tumblers and cups: A satisfying weight that fits the hand, and the moment you add ice, the entire vessel chills — for an exquisite mouthfeel.
  • Teapots and tea canisters: Tea ware that leverages copper\'s antimicrobial action and high airtightness, enhancing the flavor and aroma of green tea. An object of admiration for tea lovers.

Frequently Asked Questions about Shimakurado\'s Tsuiki Copperware

Q. Is care difficult?

A. The basics are simply "gentle hand-washing and thorough drying."
After use, wash with a soft sponge, dry the water completely, and then store. If moisture is left, it can cause stains or unwanted verdigris. Also, since the surface coloring may peel off, absolutely avoid scrubbing the outside with metal polish (such as Pikal) or hard scouring pads.

Q. The surface color is changing with use — is it OK?

A. Yes, that\'s the "patina aging" unique to real copperware.
Through contact with the oils of your hand, friction, and components in the air, the color gradually deepens. Like leather goods, please enjoy the process of the vessel becoming uniquely yours as you use it more. If you absolutely want to restore the original luster, re-polishing at the workshop may be necessary.

Q. Where can I purchase?

A. Available on Rakuten Market and at department stores or select shops dealing in carefully curated goods.
Because the pieces are completely handmade, mass production is impossible and only a limited number reach the market. They are carried at select shops such as "Fujimaki Department Store" and at some Rakuten Market retailers. When you find a piece you love, it is recommended to purchase early as a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
