Kaikado (開化堂)

Kaikado (開化堂)

A lid that settles quietly. A canister that ages with you.

Born in Kyoto in 1875, Kaikado still crafts tea caddies by hand, following methods passed down for more than a century. The signature moment comes when you close the lid: it settles down slowly and silently as air is released — an unmistakable sign of its airtight precision. Made for tea, it also suits coffee beans, dried herbs, spices, and pasta. Over time, the metal surface develops a deeper tone and gentle sheen, reflecting the hands that use it every day. Available in tinplate, copper, and brass.

PROFILE Company & Brand Story

Kaikado was founded in Kyoto in 1875, at the dawn of Japan's modernization (Meiji 8). Using tinplate newly imported from the UK, it started as an early maker of round cans. The brand has passed down the first generation's techniques through every era, keeping handcraft at the core through changing times.

At the heart of a Kaikado tea caddy is its seal. When the lid meets the body, air escapes gradually and the lid drops naturally without sound. Each caddy is finished through over 130 steps by hand — balancing utility with a refined, minimal presence suited to any shelf or kitchen counter.

Materials include tinplate, copper, and brass — each developing its own patina as you use it. The lineup extends beyond tea: coffee canisters, pasta canisters, confectionery tins, wide-mouth styles, and two-tier models, shaped for different storage needs in the kitchen and living space.

Longevity is at the core of the design. Even if the body is dented or scratched, repair is considered a way to restore the airtight performance. The Kyoto shop is available for in-person purchases and consultations, and the Kaikado Cafe and associated roasting initiative extend the culture around these canisters.

The Slow-Closing Lid — Powered by Airtightness

Kaikado tea caddies are known for their exceptional airtightness. When you let go while closing, the lid descends slowly in a distinctive motion as air is gradually released through the joint. The quiet precision is immediately apparent — and grows more satisfying with each use.

A Patina That Grows with Daily Touch

Gently rubbing the surface with your palm each day reveals gradual changes in color and sheen. Copper begins to change in 2–3 weeks; brass in about a month; tinplate over half a year or more. Your daily routine becomes the finish, without needing any special treatment.

Made for More Than Tea

That tight seal works for many ingredients beyond tea: coffee beans, black tea, dried herbs, spices, and pasta. Set it on a shelf in the living space and it reads as an object — simple, practical, and quietly beautiful in any room.

Founded 1875 — Built for 100 Years

Each tea caddy is made through over 130 processes by Kyoto craftspeople. The airtight performance is said to last even after 100 years, and dents or damage can be addressed through repair. Kaikado is designed to stay in a home for generations.
