Usaburo Kokeshi was founded in 1950 in Shinto Village, Kitagunma-gun, Gunma Prefecture. The Kitagunma region has a long history of kokeshi production — wooden dolls originally made as toys and hot spring souvenirs in the Tohoku and Kanto regions. Usaburo's founder chose a different path from the traditional school, developing what became known as "creative kokeshi": a form not constrained by regional convention.
Traditional kokeshi follow strict rules: specific regional shapes, defined decorative patterns, and techniques passed through lineages. Creative kokeshi, by contrast, are free — the craftsperson can choose any shape, paint any subject, and combine influences from Japanese and international culture. This freedom is what allowed Usaburo to become the studio that translated licensed characters into kokeshi form.
The "yakie" (burning) technique is central to Usaburo's work. A heated nichrome wire is used to burn fine lines and details directly into the wood surface before painting. This technique allows for precise facial expressions and decorative lines that are part of the wood itself — not just painted on the surface — giving Usaburo kokeshi a depth and quality distinct from mass-produced alternatives.
