MARKAWARE

Farm to Closet — refined high-end garments for adults, built from sustainable natural materials.

MARKAWARE is a Japanese menswear brand that designs garments from the fiber up. Under the "Farm to Closet" philosophy, designer Shunsuke Ishikawa travels to farms and mills worldwide to source traceable, sustainable natural materials — organic cotton, organic wool, alpaca and hemp — then combines them with Japan's spinning, weaving and sewing expertise to create original fabrics and refined silhouettes. Since 2018, all collections use organic or sustainably grown cotton. Made in Japan.

PROFILE Company & Brand Story

MARKAWARE was launched in 2009 as the high-end line of Existence Co., Ltd., which also operates the "marka" brand and the knitwear label "Text" from its base in Nakameguro, Tokyo.

The brand's defining characteristic is material-first design. Designer Shunsuke Ishikawa visits farms and mills around the world — Peru, Argentina, Turkey, Uruguay — examining the production background of each fiber before selecting it for use.

Since 2018, all MARKAWARE collections use organic cotton or sustainably grown cotton. Original fabrics developed in-house include Organic Wool Survival Cloth® (Argentine wool), Organic Cotton Heavy Fleece, and Organic Cotton Cloth — each developed from fiber selection through yarn, weaving and finishing.

These materials are then shaped through tailoring-derived pattern work: precise cutting, structured silhouettes and minimal detailing that produce garments that are classic in feel but relevant to modern wardrobes.

MARKAWARE also incorporates blockchain-based traceability for selected fabrics and operates its own cotton farm in Peru. The direct store "PARKING" in Nakameguro serves as the brand's flagship alongside global stockists and the online store.

Farm to Closet: material sourcing as the foundation of design

MARKAWARE's design process begins with the designer visiting farms and mills worldwide to evaluate sustainable materials first-hand. Only traceable natural fibers with clear production backgrounds are adopted — a practice that has defined the brand since its start.

All collections use organic or sustainable cotton since 2018

Since 2018, every collection uses organic or sustainably grown cotton. Sources include jungle cotton (Peru), pre-organic cotton from the brand's own farm, and certified organic Turkish cotton — used in everything from denim to knitwear and wovens.

Original fabrics developed from fiber to finish

MARKAWARE develops its own fabrics, including Organic Wool Survival Cloth® (Argentine wool, three-ply yarn, gabardine weave), Organic Cotton Heavy Fleece (high-density loopback jersey) and Organic Cotton Cloth (Turkish organic cotton wovens). Each is designed and controlled from yarn through finishing.

Made in Japan, structured through tailoring-derived patterns

Manufacturing is principally completed within Japan. Tailoring-derived pattern work — precise armhole shaping, balanced shoulder construction, considered seam placement — gives each piece a distinctive fit without being overtly formal.
