BIG JOHN

BIG JOHN

Respect tradition, break the rules. Denim ideas born in Kojima, Okayama.

BIG JOHN is a Japanese denim brand based in Kojima, Kurashiki (Okayama). The story begins with sewing work in 1940. In 1958 the company started importing and contract-producing jeans, and it was incorporated in 1960. In 1965, BIG JOHN completed CANTON — described as Japan's first domestically made jeans — and also worked on wash processing the same year. In 1973, the brand developed Japanese-made denim and reached another milestone as the first "purely Japanese" jeans (from fabric to production). Since then, it has kept refining materials, specs, and sewing — always chasing the next "right" pair of jeans for the times.

PROFILE Company & Brand Story

The brand's roots go back to 1940 in Kojima, where sewing work took off. After navigating the postwar years, BIG JOHN stepped into jeans importing and contract production in 1958, and incorporated in 1960. It's the kind of timeline that feels grounded — built through steady craft, not shortcuts.

A major turning point came in 1965 with CANTON, described as Japan's first domestically made jeans. BIG JOHN also worked on wash processing that year. Then in 1973, it developed Japanese-made denim and reached the milestone of the first "purely Japanese" jeans. Moving from imported context to local fabric and production helped reframe jeans as something truly made in Japan.

Today, BIG JOHN keeps looking forward while respecting archives. You'll find research-driven pieces inspired by historical specifications, plus items beyond jeans — tops and accessories designed to "grow" alongside denim. That mix of tradition and rule-breaking shows up across the lineup.

At the center is still denim. The flagship RARE line highlights wear-driven evolution, and "R BIG JOHN PROJECT" adds another option by buying back worn-in RARE after appraisal. Instead of treating a pair as something with a hard end, the brand leaves room for what comes next.

From Kojima's sewing roots to the heart of denim

BIG JOHN started as a sewing business in Kojima in 1940. It moved into jeans importing and contract production in 1958, and incorporated in 1960. The head office remains in Kojima, keeping the brand connected to one of Japan's best-known denim towns.

1965: CANTON. 1973: "purely Japanese" jeans

In 1965, BIG JOHN completed CANTON — presented as Japan's first domestically made jeans — and also worked on wash processing the same year. In 1973, it developed Japanese-made denim and achieved another milestone with the first "purely Japanese" jeans.

Flagship "RARE" and denim you can live with

RARE is positioned as the flagship line — built around the idea of enjoying the changes that come with wear. The brand also offers "R BIG JOHN PROJECT," a program that buys back worn-in RARE after appraisal, extending how you think about a single pair.
