Shimano

Shimano was founded in 1921 in Sakai City, Osaka, manufacturing bicycle freewheel components. Sakai is historically known for its cutlery and metalworking — a tradition of precision that runs through Shimano's component engineering. The company expanded into fishing tackle in 1970, applying the same precision manufacturing approach that had made its bicycle drivetrain components the global standard.

The HAGANE (steel) concept defines Shimano's premium fishing product philosophy. HAGANE refers to cold-forged gear bodies machined to extremely tight tolerances — a process that produces gears with virtually no play, no flex under load, and a retrieve feel that remains consistent across the reel's lifespan. Cold forging aligns the metal grain structure for maximum strength without adding weight.

Micro Module Gear technology takes this further: by reducing the size of individual gear teeth while maintaining the same overall gear diameter, Shimano increases the number of contact points per revolution. More contact points mean smoother power transmission and finer modulation — a retrieve that feels like a continuous, uninterrupted glide rather than a mechanical cycle.

The DC (Digital Control) brake system, used in Shimano's top baitcasting reels, applies an electronic sensor to measure spool rotation speed in real time and adjust the magnetic brake accordingly. This effectively eliminates backlash without requiring the angler to manually set the brake before each cast — a meaningful practical advantage in field conditions where casts vary in weight and wind exposure.

Beyond fishing, Shimano's bicycle component business — derailleurs, brakes, pedals, hubs — is used at every level from entry-level commuter bikes to professional Tour de France racing. In both product areas, the same engineering philosophy applies: precision manufacturing, minimized friction, maximum consistency. The STELLA fishing reel and the Dura-Ace bicycle groupset are made by the same company, to the same standard.
